My Favorite Way to Relax and Unwind!

In this month’s TIG blog I want to share with you my favorite way to relax and unwind.  First, find your travel buddy, like I have, then spend a day on the slopes skiing!  Right there with me is my best friend and he enjoys the sport just as much as I do. From local skiing at Afton Alps, a day trip up to Lutsen Mountain, or a week out in Colorado you can enjoy the relaxation of carving back and forth down the mountain and feeling the burn in your legs. Sometimes it’s short runs but others can be 3,400 vertical feet in one slope. Yes, I like those black diamond slopes and most of the time double black diamonds for more difficulty.  It really gets the adrenalin going, and every now and then weaving in and out between the trees. Sounds like work you may say, but it is rewarding for the mind and muscles. I hope you find time in the new year to be able to relax and unwind in your favorite activities.

Daylight Savings Time Home Maintenance Reminders

November 1st, 2020 is when Daylight Savings Time ends. Besides turning your clocks back 1 hour, here are some other helpful reminders.

  1. Change the time on automatic thermostats or timers on lights.

  2. Change your smoke/carbon monoxide detector batteries and test them to make sure they are working properly.

  3. Reverse Your Ceiling Fan Direction. Make sure that your fan is spinning clockwise for the winter so it pushes the cold air up.

  4. Replace your air filters

  5. Check your emergency kit

  6. Flip or Rotate Your Mattress

  7. Dust refrigerator coils

2020 Independence!

With over 40 years as an insurance agent, here are a few of my findings why the independent insurance industry is a great choice for your insurance needs. (Bias completely intended!)

  • We know that your life changes. Certain changes require flexibility with the underwriting standards. The independent agency system offers many ways to keep you covered.

  • Independent agents generally have a broader knowledge of coverage. We are trained to consider all potential coverage gaps and convey this information to our customers.

  • Diversification is one of our mainstays. We welcome the ‘curve-balls’ people throw at us, especially when other agencies can’t find the proper coverage you need.

  • And, over-the-long-haul, independent agencies locate policies that are competitively priced.

Please stop in and say hi to us. I’m sure that you’ll agree that independence is a great thing.

Rhubarb Crisp Bars Recipe!

Sheryl’s Rhubard crisp bars . . . YUMMMMM!!!

Sheryl’s Rhubard crisp bars . . . YUMMMMM!!!

Spring 2020 has finally sprung all around us, and like me I am sure many of you now have an over-abundance of rhubarb. I've been cooking with rhubarb for over 40 years, trying all kinds of recipes from bread to jam to pie, but none of them were top of my list. That is, until I found this recipe shared by a long-closed garden center and it is hands down my favorite. So good in fact, that I can't remember the last time I used rhubarb to make any of my other recipes.

Cleaning & Safety - The Struggle is Real

COVID-19 has us all trying to keep ourselves and our homes clean and disinfected. These days it is hard to find disinfecting or cleaning products in stock due to high demand.  There are many "make-at-home" solutions out there on the internet; however, please be extremely cautious when mixing household products to create your own cleaning solutions.  Some of them can produce toxic fumes which when combined are very dangerous, damaging your respiratory system and/or your skin. Certain chemical products when mixed together in a bottle may also explode.  Remember to always use rubber gloves and some sort of face/eye protection to avoid inhaling fumes or worse.  Stay safe and healthy!

Household Products You Should Never Mix:

  • Bleach + Vinegar = creates chlorine gas

  • Bleach + Ammonia = creates chloramine gas

  • Bleach + Rubbing Alcohol = creates chloroform gas

  • Hydrogen Peroxide + Vinegar = creates peracetic or corrosive acid.

Beautiful Maui!

Recently my family went to the beautiful island of Maui for a vacation. To discover the island, we rented a 2019 Ford Explorer. Driving in Maui is very different than driving in Minnesota.

IMG_2889.jpg

Maui has many distractions - the ocean, whales, scenery, many visitors from all over the world, hair pin turns, one lane roads (paved and unpaved) and bridges, steep cliffs, blind corners, etc.

Having an auto accident with the 2019 Ford would have caused stress dealing with the damaged vehicle. Also, loss of vacation time dealing with the rental car company.

My Minnesota Personal Auto Insurance policy would have potentially covered the physical damage for the Ford Explorer however, it would be subject to the property damage perils and coverage limitations. The minimum property damage limit available is $10,000. Most policies can be increased to $500,000. (Please make sure the property damage limit is high enough to coverage the value of the rented vehicle. For example - the manufactured suggested retail price of a 2019 Ford Explorer ranges from $33,000 to $43,000.) The rental car company may also charge the damages to my credit card while the insurance company settles the claim and I may be responsible for loss of use of the rental car while it is being repaired and have to pay those costs out of my pocket. What a damper this would have put on our vacation.

The rental car damage claim would be subject to two contracts - the Minnesota Personal Auto Insurance Policy and the Rental Car Contract. Both contracts are very lengthy with terms and conditions. To avoid possible gaps in coverage the insurance industry highly recommends insureds purchase the loss damage waiver or collision waiver from the rental car company in addition to their personal auto policy coverage.

Planning the trip of a lifetime?

Have you have booked your flight to Paris?  Secured your passage on a cruise to Greece? Bought your tickets to explore the Swiss Alps?  Before you pack your bags to travel outside the United States, you should consider purchasing a Travel Health Insurance plan. Travel health insurance  is not the same as trip insurance that covers you for the cost of your travel plans if your plans change and you can’t travel, travel health insurance covers medical expenses while you are out of the U.S.  Travel Health Insurance plans are reasonable, easy to purchase and provide you peace of mind while traveling. Plans can be purchased for 1 day or as long as 6 months. During a trip you may need to see a doctor, receive care at a hospital or deal with an unexpected medical emergency. The evacuation benefit on a travel health insurance plan pays for medical evacuation to the nearest hospital, appropriate medical facility or back to the U.S.  Call the Thomes Insurance Group for a free, no obligation quote.

Liability Umbrella - Why should I consider purchasing a Liability Umbrella Policy?

You have purchased insurance to protect your greatest assets, your home and your car………great! But what if they could be taken from you.  Consider this……. you have been putting off and putting off finishing the railing on your staircase banister.  You have been working so hard all week long, and just want a nice Saturday date day out with your special person.    So, you hire a sitter to watch the littles.  Halfway through your date day you get a call. While playing tag with your littles, the babysitter went to use that unfinished hand railing, lost her footing and came tumbling down the stairs.   The sitter tears her ACL. The sitter happens to be her schools star basketball player and Is now unable to play and has lost her scholarship to MSU TO PLAY WITH THE GOPHERS!  Good thing you purchased that million in liability protection or that sitters attorney might just come after your assets.

I am going to rent out my home.......do I need different insurance?

Are you considering renting your home to a family and no longer living in it yourself? Wondering if you need to notify your insurance agent? The answer is - Yes - with a rental exposure there is a need for additional coverage. In the insurance world, rental dwelling coverage is often referred to as a dwelling fire policy, it is similar to homeowner's insurance, but don't let us confuse you with our terminology... Were here to help!

There are differences between a homeowners (requires an owner occupied home) policy and a dwelling fire (tenant occupied home) policy. It's not just a reduction in property coverage for your personal belongings or company underwriting requirements, but additional liability coverage is needed too. If your rental home is located in an association that can require more coverage changes . Let us help you with your change in insurance coverage for your new venture -you don't want to find out after a claim that you did not have the right coverage in place.

Winter --- a good time to think about your personal property coverage.

If you had an insurance loss today, would you be able to provide a list of items?   Do you have the correct amount of coverage and should some of your items be scheduled?  This should always be evaluated at each policy renewal, but another good time is during the winter months when most of us are generally not as busy.

While your homeowners policy typically provides coverage on your personal property, some categories may have a limit per item.   There may be an endorsement available to increase the limit or you may want to schedule some of your items.  Advantages of scheduling is that you can choose a lower deductible per item and have broader coverage.

So, what are some things you can do?

  1. Take annual pictures showing the interior view of each room in your home to have record of how your home looked inside before a loss.

  2. Schedule items such as jewelry, firearms, antiques, collectibles, musical instruments, golf equipment, fine art, furs, silverware, cameras, and portable tools

  3. Keep a list of items and appraisals.  If possible, list manufacturer, model/serial number.  Store a backup off premises.

Greg's advice on drones…

Drones require special attention for both drone owners and those of us in the insurance sector. Some regulatory constraints hampering wider drone use are falling away. Each and every day, some new application for drone use finds its way into commerce and industry. So, how are drones covered?

We are seeing many insurance policies producing new wording which excludes the use of drones. Other insurance companies are offering “pay-as-you-fly” insurance to drone pilots. Whether your drone is owned by you personally, or if it is owned by your company, we recommend that you check out the available coverage offered from your insurer. Don’t get caught without the proper coverage, and don’t assume that your drone is automatically covered!

October 2015 Blog #1 –The How To’s of Insurance: For the Post-High School/College Grad

As a child growing up, you have your whole life set out for you. Your job is to attend school every day, finish your homework, and complete your chores…once those responsibilities are complete you can spend your down-time doing the fun things that you choose to do. But what happens when you are about to finish schooling and graduate high school? What do you choose to do next? Should you pursue higher education? Should you obtain a job? When taking this big step away from the routine of your grade school years, young adults are handed a huge responsibility to choose for themselves what to pursue. This also marks the time when personal insurance should be discussed with young adults, as they venture out into their own independence. When I graduated from high school, I am willing to admit I knew very little about my own insurance. My parents tried to explain it all to me…how things would change, what I should know, but insurance tends to fall on the back burner with so many other big priorities on a recent graduate’s plate. The following are insurance tips and knowledge a recent graduate (from high school or college) should know about property and casualty insurance as they delve into handling their own, as an independent adult.

Renters/Home Insurance:

When a child leaves for school, parents should review their home insurance policy for possible changes in coverage options. If you aren’t living at home (which is covered on your parents’ homeowners’ policy) a rental policy should be considered to cover the items you own/take with you. An updated inventory of the child’s belongings should be created in order to cover them within a policy. Take pictures of belongings that you bring with you for coverage on your policy.

Auto Insurance:

Contact your auto insurance agent prior to leaving for school, so proper adjustments can be made on the policy such as change of location, change in vehicle access, different city rates, etc. If you buy and register your own vehicle, you will need your own separate auto policy. Many companies offer good student discounts, so explore any possible discount options. Verify your policy has adequate liability coverage, to protect your future in the case of any lawsuits.

AAA Membership:

Enrolling for a AAA membership you receive coverage in any car, anytime, anywhere as a driver or passenger with the security of roadside assistance. Members receive perks to save on dining, shopping, hotels, rental cars, travel events, auto care nationally through AAA instant discounts. Through online shopping, members can earn AAA dollars that help pay for their membership renewal. Members also receive travel benefits they are able to use worldwide through AAA Travel Agency, along with free TripTik maps and TourBook guides for members.

October 2015 Blog #2 – HALLOWEEN: No Tricks, just Treats

Summer has ended and the fall season is upon us. Trees are changing and the days are cooler. October is flying by as weekends are spent at apple orchards and pumpkin patches. Soon the first of the fall holidays will be here…All Hallows Eve: A night when jack-o-lanterns light the paths for costumed children walking door to door for tricks or treats. Though this holiday is a favorite of all ages, more tricks than treats can happen on this spooky night. Here are some helpful tips to prevent any unwanted Halloween liability horrors…

For property owners:

Make sure your yard, driveway, sidewalk, stairs, and porch are cleared to avoid anyone tripping over anything. Keep your walkways well-lit so guests can see where they are walking. Don’t leave matches, lighters, or candles out. Replace any candles (in pumpkins, etc.) with outdoor approved battery-powered lights. Verify any lights used outside your home are outdoor approved. Place decorations so they do not touch any lights or sources of heat. Keep pets inside house away from front door. If possible, keep all vehicles parked in your garage for the night. If vehicles are parked outside, make sure they are parked out of the way and locked. Only hand out individually wrapped and packaged candy/treats.

For Trick or Treaters/Parents:

Always travel in a group. Walk in neighborhoods you are familiar with. Try to stay on sidewalks while walking, and only cross streets at crosswalks or well-lit street corners. Have every member of your group wear glow sticks, reflective wear/tape, or carry flashlights in order to be visible to drivers. Never enter stranger’s homes. If children own cell phones, have them keep them on and at full volume, as well as your own cell phone. Try to not drive in neighborhoods Halloween night, especially teenage drivers. If driving is necessary, be on the alert for pedestrians, have your headlights on, and drive very slowly. If your kids are trick or treating elsewhere with friends, be sure to know their location/neighborhood. Once home, go through your entire child’s candy to inspect it before they eat anything!

Health Insurance Open Enrollment Tip #1

The health insurance open enrollment time is upon us.   When shopping for your 2016 coverage it is very important to check the network of providers your plan is using. Insurance companies can have several networks available. Once you have narrowed down your choice of plans we encourage you to take a real hard look at the network. Is your primary doctor/clinic in the network, how about a specialist, your chiropractor, dermatologist, podiatrist, etc. It can be very disappointing to find out your long-time, trusted physician is not covered by your plan and you need to seek a new provider. Thomes Insurance Group can help you shop for your 2016 health insurance plan.
